Magnolia tree buds
The magnolia trees on our street, are some of the first in blossom every year.

Last year they were already out at this time, their gorgeous big white flowers unfolding at the first hint of spring warmth.

But those big flowers need some serious protection in their buds from winter cold.

And clever nature has come up with a snuggly warm solution.

If you’ve got magnolia trees near you, check out their buds. They’re all thick and furry so the flowers can grow almost full size inside without being hit by the big freeze.

And whilst you’re looking, it’s worth checking out the other buds around.

And nature has come up with all sorts of smart ways to protect the new flowers.

From plasticky black shells on the pussy willow to sticky “raincoats” on the chestnuts.

Horse chestnut trees are loved by children for their conker brown nuts but are actually up to all sorts of clever stuff throughout the year and provide a wonderful opportunity for children to observe close up the lifecycle of trees.

What winter buds can you spot growing near you?
